    庫格曼指出，孟加拉總理哈希娜把大部分極端主義犯罪歸咎於反對黨，即伊斯蘭大會黨與孟加拉國家黨，「這種指控雖不見得全錯……但把持續惡化的極端主義暴力歸罪於政敵，太天真也太危險」。

  • 不過孟加拉安全官員說，這一連串謀殺案的凶手為國內2個激進團體：「伊斯蘭教法虔信者」（Ansar-al-Islam）與「聖戰協會」（Jamaat-ulMujahideen）。前者效忠基地組織，後者宣稱代表IS。

    與IS有聯繫的「阿瑪克通訊社」宣稱，人質事件正是IS所為。不過IS是否在孟加拉實際運作，沒有具體證明。孟加拉境內極端組織隨即成為被懷疑對象，特別是與IS和「基地印度次大陸分支」（AQIS）有聯繫的組織。

    最有名的案子為2014年孟加拉裔美籍部落客作家羅伊，在達卡年度書展會場外公然遭到殺害。再來是今年4月，孟加拉第一本同志維權雜誌的編輯曼南與朋友，在家中也遭到凶徒喬裝闖入刺死。

    美國華府智庫「威爾遜國際學者中心」負責南亞研究的庫格曼說，「孟加拉當地有很多軍事分子與激進人士喜歡打著IS的名號發動攻擊，不過兩者通常毫無瓜葛」。

      過去幾星期仍繼續傳出攻擊事件，地點擴及到鄉間，且頻率愈來愈密集，5月至7月就有10起。受害者包括大學教授、印度教、基督教、佛教教徒，甚至還有什葉派穆斯林。
